Devnagari Script is one of the most popular script in India.  Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Nepali and Modern Sindhi are written using this script.

Ubuntu is very popular in India being free , modern, fast operating system.

Marathi or Hindi typing on Ubuntu is not a problem.  Rather its very easy.  And when its  phonetic its as simple as even a layman can type in Devnagari Script.

Some time you have type  either letters in Marathi / Hindi / Sanskrit / Nepali.

Let's understand how to do it.

I have done it on Ubuntu 11.04 ( Natty ).  The procedure more or less is similar on every Ubuntu version I suppose.

To enable Marathi , you need to do simple things.

Menu  >> System >> Preferences >> Keyboard

Now select Layout Tab.  Add Hindi Bolnagri

Now you have phonetic Marathi keyboard . While typing any document in Marathi phonetically  you need to select India-Hindi-Bolnagri  from Keyboard icon appeared on the panel.  Here is the Keyboard layout.

1st level letters  -- type normally .  Exmaple :  द ट स [ I have typed d f s ]

2nd level letters -  type letter while you have pressed shift key.  Exmple :  ष ध ठ [ Here I have Typed Shift+s, Shift+d , Shift+f

3rd level letters :  There are some letters requires to type while you have pressed Right Alter key.  Example  :  इ ई  [  Here I have typed  Right_Alter_key + i ,  Right_Alter_Key + Shift +i

अ will be possible with Right Alt + a only.

प्यार - p + x + y + a + r

इत्यादी -- Right_ALt & i together + t + x + y + a + d + shift and i together.
